“The two musicians distinguish themselves in their dialogue by their mutual understanding, their ample gesture and their fluid breathing…”

By virtue of its rare instrument combination – viola and harpsichord on period instruments – the duo Stockmarr-Macedonio proposes a unique sound world. The duo composed by Marie Stockmarr Becker (viola) and Ilaria Macedonio (harpsichord) was founded in 2013, when the two musicians studied early music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.

The duo’s passion is to explore the original repertoire for viola and harpsichord, thus shedding light on this exquisite instrument combination and making rarely performed music accessible to a wider audience. Since its inception, the duo has carried out many concert tours and performed extensively in Denmark and Italy. They have guested concert series such as Onsdagskoncerterne and Early Monday in Copenhagen, Sastamale Gregoriana, Finland, and they have performed in venues such as the Auditorium Marianum in Perugia, the Danish Institute in Rome (Acdan) and Huis te Poort in Schiedam, Netherlands.

In 2021, the duo released its debut album with Johann Sebastian Bach’s three sonatas for viola (da gamba) and harpsichord BWV 1027-1029 on Channel Classics Records. Their next recording-project focuses on music originally written for viola and harpsichord by Bach’s sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann as well as their mentor and family friend Johann Gottlieb Graun. This new album will be released in 2024.

Duo Stockmarr-Macedonio has received support and grants from several foundations including Augustinus Fonden, Frederiksberg Fonden, Solistforeningen af 1921, Dronning Ingrid’s Romerske Fond, Tidlig Musik Danmark, Konstnärsnämnden and Kulturrådet.
